Young Engineers

, Vice President, Marketing at solidThinking

It has been a while since my last blog entry.  It has been a busy time. I attended a great Altair India HTC, presenting at NDIA GVSETS and then experiencing the excitement around Altair HQ with the official launch of the LCO-140H (the world’s first series hydraulic hybrid transit bus). After those experiences, it is difficult for me to imagine why so many graduates are not enthused by automotive, or mechanical engineering in general, as I mentioned in a previous blog.

So I thought I’d talk about a couple things that I think are exciting ways to reverse this trend. Read More

Have we Optimized our Designs?

, Executive Director - Global Aerospace

Everyone that designs products claims that they have optimized their designs.  It is true that companies generally iterate on their design concepts to achieve a better result, but is this truly optimized?

A few years ago, I went to Disneyland with my family and in the Innovations Pavilion, they had a show with Asimo the robot made by Honda.  I was quite impressed.  Asimo could walk up and down stairs, pick things up, avoid obstacles and respond to voice commands.  I suspect that if you talked to the engineering team that developed Asimo, they would tell you that Asimo is an optimized product.  They would not mean that Asimo is perfect, but they had definitely iterated on many design ideas to come up with a product that could do a lot of things well.

India will be no exception with, among others, Charlie Loh from Jaguar Land Rover addressing the “Journey from Physical to Virtual Verification” and Suresh Nandagopal, President, Autoliv India providing a “Safety Outlook for Automotive”.

Material modeling at a micro-mechanical level was a tool once reserved for only the highest level aerospace composites. Now an accurate understanding of material behavior is essential for manufacturers of parts from automotive dashboards to cell phones.

Muscle Cars, Hybrids and Stochastics

, Vice President, Marketing at solidThinking

There was a story in USA Today this week with the headline “American muscle cars outselling fuel-thrifty hybrids despite $4 gas”. It is a pretty entertaining fact and while for the month of May it was true that Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger outsold all Hybrids added together, it is not the whole story. The Car Connection did a good job of breaking down the numbers and putting them in context.
